The Best EV Chargers We Install & Recommend in 2026

Finding the Right EV Charger for Your Home

Choosing a home EV charger can feel overwhelming. There are dozens of brands, different power ratings, tethered vs untethered options, and a huge range of prices. So how do you know which one is right for you?

At Evans Electrical Services, we've installed hundreds of EV chargers across Cheshire and the North West. We've seen which chargers stand the test of time, which ones our customers love, and which ones cause nothing but headaches. This guide breaks down the chargers we actually install, recommend and trust — with fully transparent pricing.

⚡ Why the Charger You Choose Matters

Not all EV chargers are created equal. A cheap, unbranded unit might save you £100 upfront, but it could cost you far more in the long run with poor reliability, no smart features and limited warranty support. The chargers we recommend have been chosen because they deliver on three things: reliability, smart features and long-term value.

Every charger we install comes with full supply and installation, DNO notification, building control notification, an electrical installation certificate and manufacturer warranty registration — all included in the price. No hidden extras, no nasty surprises.

🏆 Our Top Recommended EV Chargers

Zappi by myenergi — From £1,055

Zappi EV charger installed and being tested by Evans Electrical

The Zappi is the UK's most popular smart EV charger, and for good reason. Made right here in Britain by myenergi, it's the go-to choice for homeowners with solar panels or anyone who wants maximum control over their energy usage.

What makes the Zappi special is its Eco and Eco+ charging modes. If you have solar PV, the Zappi can automatically use your excess solar energy to charge your car — essentially giving you free fuel from the sun. In Eco+ mode, it will only charge using surplus solar, meaning zero grid electricity. In standard Eco mode, it tops up from the grid when solar isn't enough.

  • 7kW single-phase charging
  • Solar PV compatible with Eco and Eco+ modes
  • Built-in energy monitoring
  • Available in multiple colours
  • 3-year manufacturer warranty

Best for: Homeowners with solar panels, eco-conscious drivers, and anyone who wants the most advanced smart charging features on the market.

Hypervolt Home Pro 3 — From £1,055

Hypervolt Home Pro 3 EV charger installed by Evans Electrical

The Hypervolt Home Pro 3 is one of the sleekest, most compact chargers available. Don't let its size fool you — this is a seriously powerful and feature-rich unit that consistently impresses our customers.

The Hypervolt app is one of the best in the business. It gives you complete control over scheduling, energy monitoring and charging sessions. You can set it to charge only during off-peak hours, track exactly how much energy you're using, and even set spending limits. It's the charger we recommend for tech-savvy drivers who want a premium experience.

  • 7kW single-phase charging
  • Smart app control and scheduling
  • Built-in energy meter
  • IP65 rated weatherproof
  • 3-year manufacturer warranty

Best for: Drivers who want a compact, premium charger with an excellent app experience and smart tariff integration.

Ohme Home Pro (Tethered) — From £950

Ohme Home Pro EV charger installed on a brick wall

The Ohme Home Pro is the intelligent choice for drivers on smart energy tariffs like Octopus Go, Intelligent Octopus or Agile. What sets the Ohme apart is its deep integration with energy suppliers — it automatically finds the cheapest electricity rates and charges your car during those windows, without you lifting a finger.

It's a tethered unit, which means the cable is permanently attached. For most home users this is actually more convenient — just grab the cable, plug in and walk away. No hunting for a separate cable in the boot.

  • 7kW tethered charger
  • Smart tariff integration (Octopus, British Gas, E.ON and more)
  • Automatic cheapest-rate charging
  • Universal Type 2 cable included
  • 3-year manufacturer warranty

Best for: Drivers on smart energy tariffs who want to minimise their charging costs automatically.

Sync EV (Tethered) — From £859

Sync EV charger installed by Evans Electrical

The Sync EV is our value champion. It's a no-nonsense, reliable tethered charger that does exactly what it needs to do — charge your car safely and efficiently at 7kW. If you don't need solar integration or smart tariff features and just want a quality charger professionally installed, this is the one.

Don't mistake affordable for cheap. The Sync EV is a well-built, compact unit with a clean LED status indicator and a sturdy Type 2 cable. It's backed by a 3-year warranty and we've had excellent reliability from these units across dozens of installations.

  • 7kW tethered charger
  • Compact wall-mounted design
  • LED status indicator
  • Type 2 cable included
  • 3-year manufacturer warranty

Best for: Budget-conscious drivers who want a reliable, quality installation without paying for features they don't need.

🔌 Other Brands We Install

While the four chargers above are our top recommendations, we're not limited to them. We also supply and install chargers from:

  • Wallbox — stylish, design-forward chargers with excellent build quality
  • Pod Point — one of the UK's most recognised EV charging brands
  • Easee — the compact Norwegian charger with a growing UK following
  • Anderson — robust commercial and domestic charging solutions
  • EO — simple, affordable chargers with a strong track record
  • Rolec — established UK manufacturer with a wide range of options
  • Tesla Wall Connector — for Tesla owners who want the branded experience
  • Indra — specialists in vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology
  • Cord Zero — sleek, reliable home charging units
  • Masterplug — trusted UK brand with straightforward charging solutions

If you have a preferred brand or a specific charger in mind, just let us know. We'll source it, install it and certify it — all to the same high standard.

💰 What's Included in Our Prices

We believe in fully transparent pricing. When we quote you a price, that's the price you pay. Every installation includes:

  • Full supply of the charger unit
  • Professional installation to BS 7671 18th Edition regulations
  • DNO (Distribution Network Operator) notification — we handle this on your behalf
  • Building control notification — as EV charger installation is notifiable work
  • Electrical Installation Certificate
  • Manufacturer warranty registration
  • Post-install demonstration and handover
  • Ongoing after-sales support

There are no hidden fees for paperwork, no extra charges for certification and no surprise call-out fees. The price we quote is the price you pay.

📋 DNO Notification — What Is It and Why Does It Matter?

Every EV charger installation requires notification to your local Distribution Network Operator (DNO). This is the company that manages the electricity network in your area — not your energy supplier, but the company that owns the cables and infrastructure.

The DNO needs to know about your charger because it adds a significant load to your property's electrical supply. They use this information to manage the local grid and ensure your supply is adequate. We handle the entire DNO notification process for you — you don't need to fill in any forms or make any phone calls.

🏗️ Building Control — We Handle That Too

Installing an EV charger is classified as notifiable electrical work under Part P of the Building Regulations. This means it must either be carried out by a registered competent person (like us — we're NICEIC approved) or inspected by your local building control body.

As NICEIC registered electricians, we're authorised to self-certify our work and notify building control directly. You'll receive all the documentation you need, and building control will be notified automatically. It's one less thing for you to worry about.

🔧 Tethered vs Untethered — Which Should You Choose?

Tethered Chargers

The cable is permanently attached to the charger. You simply grab it, plug into your car and you're charging. It's the most convenient option for home use — no fumbling with cables, no storage issues.

Untethered (Socketed) Chargers

The charger has a socket and you use your own cable. This gives you flexibility if you have multiple vehicles with different connectors, or if you want to take your cable with you for public charging. However, most modern EVs use the same Type 2 connector, so this flexibility is less important than it used to be.

Our recommendation: For most home users, a tethered charger is more convenient. The Ohme Home Pro and Sync EV are both tethered and cover the majority of our customers' needs perfectly.
