Why Smart Home Wiring Starts with Your Electrician

Smart homes are no longer a luxury — they're becoming the standard. From voice-controlled lighting and automated blinds to whole-house audio and intelligent heating, the technology is more accessible and affordable than ever.

But here's the catch: the smartest technology in the world is only as good as the wiring behind it. Get the electrical infrastructure right from the start and you'll have a future-proof home. Get it wrong and you'll face costly retrofitting, unreliable connections, and frustrated calls to tech support.

At Evans Electrical Services, we're increasingly asked to wire homes for smart technology — whether it's a new build, a renovation, or an upgrade to an existing property. Here's what you need to know.

💡 Smart Lighting: The Gateway to Smart Homes

What You Need

Smart lighting is usually the first step. The options include:

Smart bulbs (e.g., Philips Hue) — easy to install but require a neutral wire at each switch location for smart switches
Smart switches (e.g., Lightwave, Shelly) — replace your existing switches and control standard bulbs. Most require a neutral wire at the switch plate
Smart dimmers — need compatible LED drivers and sometimes deeper back boxes

The Neutral Wire Problem

This is the single biggest issue we see. Many UK homes — especially those built before 2000 — don't have a neutral wire at the light switch. Without it, most smart switches won't work properly (or at all).

The fix: We can run a neutral wire to your switch locations during a rewire or as a standalone upgrade. It's much easier (and cheaper) to do this during a renovation than after the walls are finished.

🔌 Power Circuits for Smart Devices

Plan Your Sockets

Smart homes need more power outlets than traditional homes. Think about:

Smart hubs and bridges — Hue Bridge, SmartThings hub, HomeKit devices all need power
Voice assistants — Alexa, Google Nest, HomePod in multiple rooms
Network equipment — Wi-Fi mesh nodes, Ethernet switches, NAS drives
Motorised blinds — need a power supply at or near the window head
CCTV cameras — PoE (Power over Ethernet) cameras need Cat6 cabling run to each location

We recommend installing dedicated circuits for home networks and AV equipment to avoid interference and ensure clean power delivery.

🌐 Structured Cabling: Cat6 & Fibre

Don't Rely on Wi-Fi Alone

Wi-Fi is great for phones and tablets, but a properly smart home needs hardwired Ethernet (Cat6 or Cat6a) for:

Smart TVs and streaming devices
Home office setups
PoE security cameras
Wi-Fi access points (for a mesh network)
Gaming consoles
NAS and home servers

We install Cat6 cabling during rewires and renovations, terminating to patch panels in a central location (usually near your router). This gives you gigabit speeds throughout the house with zero Wi-Fi dead spots.

🔋 EV Charger Preparation

If you're rewiring or renovating, now is the time to prepare for an EV charger — even if you don't have an electric car yet. We can:

Run a dedicated 6mm or 10mm cable from the consumer unit to your driveway or garage
Install a dedicated 32A or 40A circuit with its own RCBO
Fit an isolation switch at the charger location

Pre-wiring for an EV charger during a renovation costs a fraction of retrofitting later — and avoids the disruption of lifting floorboards or chasing walls after decoration.

🏠 Whole-House Audio & Multi-Room Systems

Sonos and similar wireless speakers work well, but for a truly integrated system, in-ceiling speakers with dedicated amplifier cabling deliver far superior sound quality. We install:

Speaker cables to ceiling locations in key rooms
Central AV rack power with dedicated circuits
HDMI/fibre runs for distributed video systems

🔒 Smart Security Integration

A properly wired smart security system includes:

Hardwired alarm panels — more reliable than battery-powered alternatives
PoE CCTV cameras — single cable for power and data, no batteries to replace
Smart doorbell wiring — Ring and similar doorbells work best with a wired connection
Automated outdoor lighting — motion-triggered and app-controlled

⚡ Consumer Unit Requirements

A smart home puts more demand on your consumer unit. You may need:

Additional circuits for EV chargers, outdoor power, and dedicated AV supplies
A larger consumer unit — we typically install 18- or 21-way boards for smart homes
RCBO protection on every circuit — prevents one tripped circuit from taking down your entire smart home
SPD (Surge Protection Device) — protects sensitive electronics from power surges. Now mandatory in new installations under BS 7671

If your current consumer unit is full or outdated, upgrading it is the first step before any smart home work.

📐 When to Plan Smart Home Wiring

The best time to wire for smart technology is:

During a full rewire — the walls are open, so running extra cables costs very little
During a renovation or extension — before plastering and decorating
During a new build — first fix is the cheapest time to add structured cabling

Retrofitting smart wiring into a finished home is possible but costs 2–3x more due to the need to lift floors, chase walls, and make good afterwards.
